How To Use NLP Swish Technique?
If you have unwanted habits or experience behaviors that are limiting you, then you can use the NLP swish technique (sometimes known as the swish pattern) to break these. If you want to gain more confidence, eliminate nerves before a presentation or quit smoking then the swish pattern can be very effective.
Identify the Problem Behavior
The first step to using NLP swish technique is to identify the problem that you want to eradicate. Maybe you have a fear of meeting new people, a fear of public speaking, a general fear of failure or something such as not following a healthy diet or getting enough exercise.
You need to find what triggers this unwanted behavior. A good way to do this is to ask yourself a question like “what do I experience first so that I can be sure that (the problem) is coming?”
So if you have a fear of public speaking and get very nervous, what triggers your nervousness? Do you get a certain feeling first? Do you visualize something? Do you hear anything? You must understand what the trigger is.
If you are finding it difficult to identify the trigger then imagine that you have to teach someone else about your problem behavior. You are literally going to teach someone how to be nervous about public speaking. What single image would you need to make others react in this way?
Once you have identified your trigger, make a note of it and then break your state. Do this by performing another activity for a few seconds. This will assist in the resetting of your brain before you proceed to the next step.
Decide on your Ideal Response
It is time now to identify the image to embed in your subconscious that will replace the old negative image that you identified in the first step. The new positive image will occur instead of the old negative image after this.
As an example, you might have bad behavior which stops you from visiting the gym to complete a regular exercise routine. So you can create a new image where you are feeling wonderful after your gym session with that buzz of endorphins. Obviously this needs to be a positive image that will conjure up strong emotions within you. It needs to be really powerful.
The idea of this new image is that it will motivate you to carry out the desired action. After choosing your image you now need to ramp it up! You will do this by making the image larger, clearer, and brighter. Make it so compelling that you can revel in every last detail and that it conjures up the positive feelings that you are looking for.
The idea is to make the feeling very intense when you see the new image. Keep making the image larger and brighter until you get it right. You need to be feeling on top of the world so that your brain is convinced that this is the better path to take.
Now break your state and do something entirely different for a few seconds.
Now Swish!
This is where you replace the original bad image with the new empowering image. So picture the original image in your mind and make it larger and brighter so that you can see every detail.
Next, take a small size view of your new image and place it in the corner of the old image. To start with the new image needs to be small and dark. Now you need to swish. You need to move the new positive image far away from you. What you want to happen is have the new image comes rapidly into full view like it has rocket power.
So make the swish and the new image will fly towards you at speed getting larger and brighter. Fire up the rocket on your old image and send it away. See the new image in its full glory and make it large and bright. Check out every detail and feel how incredible it is. This is your new pattern so bask in all of its glory.
Revel in these new feelings for a while. Then break your state again.
Embedding the Change
Repeat the swish pattern ten more times to ensure that you embed the new image in your subconscious. Be sure to break your state in between each session. Test it out by thinking about going to the gym (or whatever the problem is), and try to recreate your old negative behavior. If you have done this right, then that will not be difficult for you.
